Queen's Baton Relay is Coming to Kavieng

PORT MORESBY - Papua New Guinea is preparing to receive the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay when its journey takes it to our shores on November 4, 2013.

In PNG, the baton will go to Port Moresby and Kavieng before continuing on its way to Glasgow. This will be the first time for the Queen's Baton to visit Kavieng. The Queen's Baton has previously visited Port Moresby, Lae, Goroka, Madang and Rabaul in 2006 and 2010.

The PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC) in its capacity as the PNG Commonwealth Games Association (PNG CGA) will share in the relay spirit by giving the people of Kavieng the opportunity to showcase their everyday life, cultural diversity and traditions by hosting one part of the relay on the 6th November.

To commemorate this event, the British High Commissioner, Her Excellency, Jackie Barson will travel to Kavieng to host an English tea party for children.

UNICEF has partnered with PNGOC, for a unique collaboration that seeks to touch the lives of children in Papua New Guinea. In partnership, they will be hosting the Queen's Baton Relay' Schools Sports programme. Participating in this programme will be all the invited schools within the National Capital District that are located along the selected route of the main Relay.

With these various events, the people of Kavieng and Port Moresby will have the rare and exciting opportunity to have access to viewing The Baton, as well as the opportunity to be photographed with The Baton.

The Queen's Baton begun its long journey to the 71 Commonwealth nations following the official launch at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

Her Majesty the Queen signalled the start of the relay by placing her message to the athletes into the baton. The baton was then given to Allan Wells' the first of many thousands of batonbearers who will be involved around the Commonwealth.

The Queen's Baton Relay is the traditional curtain raiser to the Commonwealth Games and has been an integral part of the Games programme since the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales. [PostCourier]
