PNG Customs to Work with the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC)

LAE (MADAG) - Recently, PNG Customs Services signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) to tackle contraband issues and protect customers.

Customs Commissioner Ray Paul said many contraband products are frequently transported by road and sea under cover of darkness. They are delivered to coastal villages in East Sepik and Madang, and later distributed to the Highlands and New Guinea Islands.

Customs will be installing an x-ray machine to check all goods entering PNG, and CCTV cameras to monitor movement of goods and people entering the country.

The technology is being used at the Jackson’s Airport and the Konedobu Post Office in Port Moresby. It will later be rolled out to Tokua in East New Britain and Nadzab in Lae. [EMTV]
