The Australian Football League Ressurected The Bougainvillean

BUKA (BOUGAINVILLE) - The Australian Football League competition has been resurrected in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. This is breakthrough for the code, which started off with a junior school competition to revive the once popular sport there.

“AFL is a game that is ideal for my people in Buka and the New Guinea Islands region because we have the athletic build for it,” said AFL junior co-ordinator, Franklin Lacey.

For almost a year Lacey had been conducting AFL training at Halia schools on Buka Island as part of their physical education classes.

But with support from AFL PNG, he has been able to conduct proper training for young athletes and has started a competition in the local level government area.

Aussie Rules was a favourite and had a large following when the region was known as the North Solomons Province. Since then the code has petered but Lacey hopes to revive it, starting off with the junior boys’ competition. [TheNational]
