Enoch Maki Makes Port Moresby Vipers Stronger

PORT MORESBY - Port Moresby Vipers’ prop Enoch Maki put on a powerhouse performance in yesterday’s Digicel Cup preliminary final against reigning premiers Rabaul Gurias.

The 23-year-old was an easy choice for the man-of-the-match award in a display that saw the 112kg forward score two tries and bend or break the Gurias’ line with every hit up.

He was the focal point of a big Vipers pack that worked over the visitors’ midfield defence that had particularly strong contributions from veteran and fellow bookend Steven John, backrowers Adam Korave and Sebastian Pandia.

“They (Gurias) were a bit tough but as the game wore on we managed to run over them,” Maki said.

A humble Maki said the city side had made it a point to get on the front foot with the aim of making a grand final for the first time in 19 years.

“Before we came out (for this game) we knew the Vipers had not been to a final in years and we really wanted to get to the final and all the boys played hard,” Maki said.

The Mt Hagen native was not even in primary school when the Vipers made their last inter-city cup final beating the Goroka Lahanis 36-30 in Port Moresby in 1994.

“I was around four-years-old the last time the Vipers made a final,” Maki, who has been part of the national squad since last year’s Prime Minister’s XIII match, said. “I hope I’ll be in the squad (World Cup), but I just have to keep playing well and score some more tries if I can.”

Maki has played for the several cup sides over his six-year career with Mt Hagen Eagles and City Rangers having the services of the man from Keltiga village, Western Highlands.

“I was 18 or 17 when I played for the Eagles (2007) and then I went to Rangers and I’ve been with the Vipers since last year.”

Maki said it was the side’s goal to win the competition and next week against minor premiers the Goroka Lahanis they would get the perfect opportunity in front of a packed Lloyd Robson Oval. [TheNational]
