PNG Special Olympics Sets Up in Sir John Guise Stadium

PORT MORESBY - Special Olympics Papua New Guinea is calling on friends and relatives of sports minded people that have an intellectual disability to come forward for a detailed physical examination and fun day.

This is happening during their one-day “Young Healthy Athletes Med Fest Programme” at the Sir John Guise Stadium indoor complex in Port Moresby on Friday 9am to midday.

The Special Olympics PNG is headed by former sprint champion Takale Tuna (pictured) as president.
He said prominent sports physician Dr Gideon Kendino would conduct the programme with assistance from Port moresby General Hospital doctors including Dr Thomas Ayaka, Dr Carl Kingston, Dr Mangu Kendino and Cheshire Homes based physiotherapist Saimona Mokupe.

He said this is a great opportunity for children and adults to come forward to ascertain their disability and be classified under what sport they can appropriately take part in for the data base.

“This message is not only for city residents but for the Central province as well,” Tuna said during the announcement yesterday.

He said this programme was created by Special Olympics International to offer physical examinations that all athletes need prior to participating in Special Olympics sports programming.

“It is important that this message is brought to the wider community. Sometimes the examination can expose life threatening conditions,” he added.

He further said the programme is two-fold as it can also open up some hidden talents, especially as they will be preparing to send a 26-member team to the Asia Pacific Special Olympics slated for late November to December in Newcastle, Australia.

Takale also thanked the Lions Club of Port Moresby and the PNG Sports Foundation for their contribution to this new project. [TheNational]
