Michael Malabag : Poor Tuberculosis Control in PNG

PORT MORESBY - Meantime, Minister for Health and H-I-V/AIDS, Michael Malabag says, there's evidence of poor Tuberculosis (TB) control in the form of drug resistance, which raises the need for aggressively addressing this serious disease.

Mr. Malabag told the one-day TB National Conference in Port Moresby, that his Department has set strategies and goals to achieve elimination of this disease, through its 2011 to 2020 Health Plan.

He says, challenges are vast in containing the disease and wants the Directly Observed Treatment Strategy or DOTS TB program, to be effectively implemented nationwide.

"There is a need for achievement made to be fully sustained by provincial and local level government as new TB infections arise every day.

"In every province, all the provinces and districts need to take ownership and be responsible for TB control it in their own provinces," MinisterMicheal Malabag said. [PNGFacts]
