Indonesia is Welcomed to Melanesia Spearhead Group (MSG)

JAKARTA - Spokesman for the Indonesai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Arrmanatha Nasir, said the member countries of Melanesia Spearhead Group (MSG) welcomed the joining of Indonesia into the group. They assess Indonesia could contribute positively to the countries in the Pacific region.

So said Arrmanatha when giving a press conference at the Foreign Ministry office in Pejambon area, Central Jakarta on Thursday, July 2, 2015. Arrmanatha said, joining the RI into the group, because they want to get closer to the countries of the Pacific.

So, not just to stem the separatist movements which would encourage an independent Papua.

"Indonesia allocates 130 technical assistance programs to countries in the Pacific region. We hope, could contribute more and share experiences," said Arrmanatha.

Moreover, Indonesia has 11 million residents of Melanesia. If the existence of that fact, but RI chose not to join with MSG, Arrmanatha likens the elephant in the eyelid that is actually invisible. The number of Melanesia in Papua is far greater when compared to the population in the countries of the Pacific region.

Moreover, with the involvement of Indonesia in development in the member countries of MSG, then it can come to accelerate development in Papua.

"For example, Indonesian products popular in the Pacific. One of Indomie. They imported instant noodles it in large amounts. If there is a market there right, the future can also Indomie factory built in Papua," said the diplomat who had worked in Geneva and New York.

Another example, Fiji is now developing as a resort and resort tourism. There, said Arrmanatha, shorts Balinese sells. In fact, it costs about US $ 23 or equivalent to Rp307 thousand.

"Meanwhile, if you buy such pants in Kuta Beach, Bali, less than 50 thousand," he added.

On that occasion, he reiterated MSG was no longer doubt the commitment of Indonesia to develop Papua. If not, they will not receive the RI become one of its members.

RI officially accepted as a member of the MSG when the summit was held in Honiara, Solomon Islands on 24 to 26 June last. Indonesia's position increased, while earlier in 2011, Indonesia still an observer. [Antara]
