Home Remove Kokopo's Illegal Settlers: Police

KOKOPO (ENB) - Police in East New Britain Province have called on the provincial government and administration to remove illegal settlements in Kokopo.

Provincial police commander Supt Anthony Wagambie Jnr said he was concerned about the growing number of settlements in Kokopo.

“These settlements are expanding and the number of unemployed people living there has doubled,” he said.

“Some of these settlements, especially at the back of Takubar, are used as hiding spots by criminals. This is a serious matter that must be dealt with by the provincial authorities immediately.”

Wagambie said there was a need to identify genuine settlers and those who were employed.

“For them, proper laws must be put in place to accommodate and service their needs,” he said.

“Their employers must be included in framing such arrangements.

“Others can be categorised as potential trouble makers.” Wagambie said with the opening of the New Britain Highway, strict measures to control and manage people’s movement should be established to avoid more illegal settlements springing up everywhere.

Police, however, could not confirm reports of ongoing stealing and break and enter activities in the Takubar, Sea View residential and Vunapope Catholic Mission areas. He urged authorities to act quickly. [TheNational]
