Goroka Develop Young Athletes with 'Givim 60 Athletics Club'

GOROKA (EASTERN HIGHLANDS) - ‘Givim 60 Athletics Club’ in Goroka plans on developing young athletes to participate at national and international athletics tournaments.

The club has already produced a champion in Simbai Kaspar, who has earned a spot on the PNG athletics team to the Mini Games.

Athletics is a self-disciplined sport and this has been demonstrated by ‘Givim 60 Athletics Club’. School children in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province now have the chance to excel in the sport.

Head Coach of the club John Hou is adamant that the club of 20 members was formed 3 months ago to cater for the growing interest in athletics at school level.

The name ‘Givim 60 Athletics Club’ goes back to the early 90’s in the days of former sprinter Takale Tuna and other like-minded students of the Goroka Teachers College.

Simbai Kaspar and Peniel Richard are two athletes that can demonstrate the success story of the ‘Givim 60’ Athletics Club.

Simbai Kaspar has been selected for the Mini Pacific Games in Wallis and Futuna. Peniel Richard on the other hand, won gold in the Open High Jump Division.

Head Coach John Hou is appealing to business houses in Goroka and around the country to assist the club with its endeavors to produce quality athletes.

Students from Goroka Secondary, West Goroka and Faniufa primary schools have shown immense interest in the code of athletics.

Exposure at the National Championships in Kokopo recently has given them so much more to work for. [EMTV]
