Manasupe Zurenuoc Gives Deadline to Remove Tints on Goverments Cars

PORT MORESBY - All government departments and agencies have been directed to remove tints from all ‘Z’ plate numbered vehicles by August 16th 2013.

Chief Secretary Manasupe Zurenuoc met with all departmental heads on Tuesday and urged them to implement Prime Minister Peter O’Neill’s directive. Yesterday, the lands department removed tints from their vehicles.

Lands Secretary Romillu Kilapat’s vehicle was first to be stripped off. His deputy and lands surveyor general’s followed soon after.

The department requested exemption earlier due to daily threats to its officers over land matters. In 2009 one of its line managers was murdered in Port Moresby.

However, the secretary said the directive issued by the chief secretary that all Zed plated vehicles remove their tints by August 16, which is next Friday.

During the last session of the Parliament, Prime Minister O’Neill directed for all government vehicles to be without tints.

This directive followed a series of questions and debates raised by parliamentarians on the alarming abuse of vehicles by the disciplinary forces.

Mr. O’Neill said failure to comply with this direction will lead to disciplinary actions taken against the responsible Departmental Head.

The Motor Vehicle Insurance Limited, Road Safety Authority and the police have been instructed to remove any dark tinting on government vehicles when they are performing their usual road inspections after 16 August 2013. [EMTV]
