Five Teams are Ready for Digicel Cup Finals

PORT MORESBY - Five teams are assured playoff berths in the Digicel Cup finals starting next week. The Goroka Lahanis will claim the minor premiership regardless of Sunday’s result against the Mt Hagen Eagles in Goroka.

The only question now is where the other four sides – Enga Mioks, Rabaul Gurias, Port Moresby Vipers and Lae Tigers – finish in the top five.

The Mioks, who are second face third-placed Gurias in Kokopo.

The winner of that match will claim second place but the irony is the Mioks and Gurias will probably meet again in the first week of  the playoffs when second plays third.

That match is likely to be played in Port Moresby.

The Vipers, who play the Simbu Lions in Kundiawa, can claim third place if they win in Chimbu.

The Tigers take on the Hela Wigmen in Mendi and a loss to the Helas will have no bearing on their finals spot.

The Vipers, who are equal on points with the Mioks and Gurias on 22 points, must win at Dickson Oval but the recent trend does not favour them.

The Lions have claimed some big scalps (Gurias, Mioks and Tigers) this season at their home ground and are unlikely to surrender to the visitors even though they are out of finals contention.

Still, this is a good test of the Vipers’ premiership credentials and the incentive for winning is they will not have to play in a sudden death match in the first week of the finals against the fifth-placed side. [TheNational]
