Five Manus Island Security Officers Charged with Murder of Local Man

LONGERAU (MANUS) - Five Papua New Guinean policemen sent to Manus Island to provide security at the processing centre have been charged with murdering a local man.

The officers are from the Police Mobile Squad and were sent to Manus Island to provide security at the Australian Government's processing centre for asylum seekers.

It is alleged the men bashed a 21-year-old local man who they had arrested for causing a disturbance in the provincial capital, Lorengau, last month.

The man was later found dead in the police lock-up.

Chief superintendent Anton Billy says the five officers were arrested, suspended and have now been charged with murder.

"One count of murder each and they're expected to appear today," he said.

Following the man's death, prime minister Peter O'Neill ordered the Police Mobile Squad off Manus Island, but superintendent Billy says they are still waiting for their plane tickets. [ABCNews]
